Donald Trump has repeatedly said all Americans should
“stand proudly” during the national anthem, and publicly chastises those
who don’t as disrespectful of the troops and the flag.
But during the national anthem at his own Super
Bowl watch party Sunday night, a brief video posted to Instagram shows
Trump greeting guests, adjusting his chair, and straightening his suit
jacket as other attendees — including first lady Melania Trump and their
teenage son — stand with their hands over their hearts. As “The Star
Spangled Banner” crescendos, Trump raises both of his hands in the air,
and twirls them around as if conducting the music.
Trump is showing the same deep and abiding respect for the flag and our American troops that he has shown in the past-- to such folks as the late Sen. John McCain, tortured for years as a prisoner of war (“I like people who weren’t captured”); and the Muslim parents whose son, an Army captain, was killed in a car bombing in Iraq as he
tried to save other troops in 2004.
And let's not forget the most recent addition to his shameful list of greatest hits: Upon learning that troops indeed received traumatic head injuries
in Iran’s attack on two U.S. bases in Iraq (after he initially claimed there were no injuries) Trump referred to them as mere
“headaches.” “I can report that it’s not very serious,” he said
reassuringly.
Trump continues to publicly humiliate himself as dementia seemingly dissolves
major areas of his brain. With the self-control of a three-year-old &
zero awareness of what he's supposed to be doing, he clowns around during
the National Anthem. Trust me-- it will keep getting worse.
Colin Kapernick, who is constantly being criticized for merely kneeling during the national anthem, has so far not commented on the situation.
