Outrage Over Trump Honoring Racist Radio Host

Scores of people across the nation are expressing outrage over Trump's decision to award the Presidential Medal of Freedom to known racist radio personality Rush Limbaugh.  Trump's move was rebuked by legislators, commentators and activists, who argued that Limbaugh's legacy of promoting racism, sexism and right-wing misinformation should not be awarded despite his tragic medical diagnosis.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., slammed Trump as a "virulent racist" who was undeserving of such a "sacred award."  "He wants to assert that Rush Limbaugh is somehow on the same level as Rosa Parks, and it's truly nauseating," she added.

Walter Shaub, the former director of the Office of Government Ethics, added that "like the Joe Arpaio pardon, Trump awarding that medal to Rush Limbaugh has nothing to do with its recipient but was awarded as a message to the viciously racist, nationalist segment of the population whose votes Trump needs. It says: Stay with me, I am with you."

Ilyse Hogue, the president of the pro-choice advocacy group NARAL, wrote, "Rush Limbaugh's most infamous act was calling a young grad student a slut for testifying in favor of contraceptive coverage. A terrible diagnosis does not erase a lifetime of racism, homophobia and misogyny. A sick man deserves healthcare; a bigot does not a medal of honor."

Limbaugh infamously coined the term "feminazis" and referred to contraception advocate Sandra Fluke as a "slut" and a "prostitute."  He also described former President Barack Obama as "Barack the Magic Negro" and a "Hafrican American."  Like Trump, Limbaugh questioned whether Obama was born in the U.S.   In response to reports that many detained migrants were forced to drink from toilets in 2019, he remarked that "maybe toilet water is a step up" for them.  In his early days, Limbaugh infamously told an African-American caller, “Take that bone out of your nose and call me back.”    Among the many, many other racist, misogynist and offensive remarks made by Limbaugh over the years:
In the early 1990's, Limbaugh said, “Have you ever noticed how all composite pictures of wanted criminals resemble Jesse Jackson?”

In 1993, Limbaugh was criticizing the NAFTA agreement, saying, “Let the unskilled jobs that take absolutely no knowledge whatsoever to do — let stupid and unskilled Mexicans do that work.”

In 1994, he said, “Socks is the White House cat. But did you know there is also a White House dog?”  The comment was made while displaying a picture of Chelsea Clinton, then a 13-year-old.

Also in 1994:  “When a gay person turns his back on you, it is anything but an insult; it’s an invitation.”

Limbaugh has been implying since the early 1990’s that Hillary Clinton metaphorically castrates men, keeping the spoils in a “testicle lockbox,” he used the phrase again as recently as February 6, 2013.

December 8, 2004:  “I think it’s time to get rid of this whole National Basketball Association. Call it the TBA, the Thug Basketball Association, and stop calling them teams. Call ‘em gangs.”

March 1, 2005:  “Women still live longer than men because their lives are easier.”

August 12, 2005:  ”Feminism was established so as to allow unattractive women easier access to the mainstream of society.”

October 2006:  “He is exaggerating the effects of the disease. He’s moving all around and shaking and it’s purely an act. … This is really shameless of Michael J. Fox. Either he didn’t take his medication or he’s acting.”

January 19, 2007:  “Look it, let me put it to you this way. The NFL all too often looks like a game between the Bloods and the Crips without any weapons. There, I said it.”

2007:  Limbaugh began calling Barack Obama a ‘halfrican American’ saying  that Obama was not Black but Arab because Kenya is an Arab region (even though Arabs are less than one percent of Kenya).  Despite the fact Obama graduated magna cum laude from Harvard Law school, Limbaugh called him an ‘affirmative action candidate.’ Limbaugh also began repeatedly playing a song on his radio show called 'Barack the Magic Negro,’ using an antiquated Jim Crow era term.

June 22, 2009:  “Obama's entire economic program is reparations.”

September 15, 2009:  “Obama’s America, white kids getting beat up on school buses now. I mean, you put your kids on a school bus, you expect safety. But in Obama’s America, the white kids now get beat up with the black kids cheering “Yay! Right on, right on, right on, right on.”

September 25, 2009:  “Holocaust 90 million Indians? Only four million left? They all have casinos, what’s to complain about?”

October 2009:  “Everything in Africa’s called AIDS. The reason is they get aid money for it. AIDS is the biggest pile of-the biggest pot they throw money into.”

August 8, 2010:  Limbaugh began using the term ”Moochelle” to refer to First Lady Michelle Obama, especially when he is discussing her efforts to fight childhood obesity. He has used the phrase many times since.

January 19, 2011:  “ ‘Ching cha. Ching chang cho chow. Cha Chow. Ching Cho. Chi ba ba ba. Kwo kwa kwa kee. Cha ga ga. Ching chee chay. Ching zha bo ba. Chang cha. Chang cho chi che. Cha dee. Ooooh chee bada ba. Jee jee cho ba.’ Nobody was translating, but that’s the closest I can get.”  Semi-indecipherable comments Limbaugh made on his radio program while “translating” Chinese President Hu Jintao.

February 2012:  “What does it say about the college co-ed Susan Fluke who goes before a congressional committee and essentially says that she must be paid to have sex – what does that make her? (pauses) It makes her a slut, right? It makes her a prostitute.”

February 3, 2013:  “I’m a huge supporter of women. What I’m not is a supporter of liberalism. Feminism is what I oppose, and feminism has led women astray. I love women. I don’t know where all this got started. I love the women’s movement, especially when walking behind it.”

Misinterpreting Beyonce's "Bow Down" single on March 22, 2013:  “Beyonce used to be the lead for a three-girl group called Destiny’s Child, and their songs were attempts to inspire young women not to take any grief from men… Beyonce’s now saying, ‘Go ahead and put up with it.’ And you know why? Because she got married. She’s married to a rich guy… She now understands it’s worth it to bow down.”

April 1, 2013:  “Those of you who are not mobilizing to change the Second Amendment, those of you who are not mobilizing to make it more difficult to get guns and weapons are the modern equivalent of people who sat around and let Bull Connor turn his dogs loose on the marches at Selma. … If a lot of African-Americans back in the ’60s had guns and the legal right to use them for self-defense, you think they would have needed Selma? I don’t know, I’m just asking.”

July 22, 2013:  “If any race of people should not have guilt about slavery, it’s Caucasians.”

In 2006, author Jack Huberman claimed that Limbaugh said, “I mean, let’s face it, we didn’t have slavery in this country for over 100 years because it was a bad thing. Quite the opposite: slavery built the South. I’m not saying we should bring it back; I’m just saying it had its merits. For one thing, the streets were safer after dark.”  The quote was also reported on by Bryan Burwell of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Author Jack Huberman also claimed that Limbaugh said “You know who deserves a posthumous Medal of Honor? James Earl Ray [the confessed assassin of Martin Luther King]. We miss you, James. Godspeed.”
