Before we get too much further into the summer season, it's time to recap the year in movies so far. I tend to divide the year into three parts, the first of which ends just before the summer blockbusters start to roll out. It can be a real hodge-podge-- studios aren't sure what the trends will be or what audiences will be looking for. So consequently, the months of January to April can contain a mix of Oscar-season leftovers, real gems, films that Hollywood marketers don't know how to sell, or some flicks that studios can't find a release date for later in the year. Anyway, here are my early picks on the most Oscar-worthy candidates year-to-date-- if you have a chance to see them (or pick them up on DVD later in the year) you should:
