Bushies Trying To "Spin" History

Caught this item on thinkprogress.org-- it seems that Karl Rove is heading up the "Bush Legacy Project" in the waning days at the White House to try and put spin on Bush's presidency before the historians weigh in. It's such a daunting task, that Karen Hughes has been brought in to help with the heavy lifting.

I'm sorry to tell you all that Bush's legacy is already written in stone, and no amount of bullshit is going to help improve it. The only thing left to do is come up with a clever title for the Bush legacy-- like this personal favorite (courtesy of a thinkprogress commenter): "How to Destroy the World Economy and murder millions in eight short years"

Let's take a quick tour of the Bush presidency:

2000: Bush loses popular vote, but his lawyers win the presidency at the Supreme Court

2001: Bush tax cuts, setting the stage for record-setting deficits; Patriot Act is signed, setting the stage for unprecedented constitutional violations; Invasion of Afghanistan; warrantless wiretapping/spying on Americans begin

2002: No Child Left Behind; Homeland Security Act; DOJ secretly authorizes torture; "Gitmo Gulag" opens in Guantanamo

2003: Invasion of Iraq based on phony intelligence; Medicare Prescription Drug benefit; beginning of extraordinary renditioning by CIA; Bush authorizes Scooter Libby to leak Valerie Plame's identity

2004: Alaska's North Slope opened to drilling, threatening the Arctic National Wildlife refuge; Insurgency in Iraq takes hold

2005: Central America Free Trade Act; Bankruptcy is "reformed", making it more difficult for folks to declare bankruptcy; Hurricane Katrina debacle

2006: U.S. Troop deaths in Iraq climb to record levels; Patriot Act renewed; Bush vetoes stem cell research; GOP loses control of both houses of Congress; politically-motivated firings of seven U.S. attorneys

2007: Immigration Reform fails; beginning of subprime mortgage crisis; the "Surge" in Iraq

2008: Beginning of the Bush recession; vetoed increased funding for intelligence efforts because it had a provision outlawing torture; Bush's approval rating hits an all-time low (worse even than Nixon's)
