2014 Winter Olympics Are Headed To Putin's Playground

Yesterday, the International Olympic Committee met in Guatemala City and voted to award the 2014 Winter Olympics to Sochi, Russia. Sochi, a resort city in the southern Russian district of Krasnodar, is 8 hours ahead of Eastern Standard Time. The XXII Olympic Winter Games will be held February 7 to February 23, 2014. This will be Russia's second time hosting the Olympics, as they had previously hosted the 1980 Summer Games in Moscow (which at that time was part of the Soviet Union), and the first time hosting the Winter Games. Sochi (according to many, President Putin's favored getaway spot) averages 44 degrees in the winter, rarely dipping below freezing. The Games will be organised in two clusters, a coastal cluster in Sochi and a mountain cluster in Krasnaya Polyana (in the Caucasus mountains).

The Sochi Olympic Park is located along the Black Sea in the Imeretinskaya Valley, and will have the following venues:

* Bolshoi Ice Palace - Ice hockey
* Maly Ice Palace - Ice hockey
* Sochi Olympic Oval - Speed skating
* Sochi Olympic Skating Centre - Figure skating and short track
* Sochi Olympic Curling Centre - Curling
* Sochi Olympic Stadium - Opening and Closing Ceremonies

The new Sochi Olympic Stadium will be built in the new Sochi Olympic Park. It will be located within walking distance of the Olympic Village and the capacity of the stadium will be 40,000. The stadium, designed like a shell to recall the glories of Fabergé art, will provide a unique seaside setting for winter Opening and Closing Ceremonies.

The Krasnaya Polyana area will host the mountain/nordic events in the following venues:

* Russian National Sliding Centre - Luge, Bobsleigh and Skeleton
* Psekhako Ridge - Biathlon, cross-country skiing and nordic combined
* Roza Khutor Alpine Resort - Alpine skiing and snowboard
* Alpika Service Mountain Resort - Freestyle skiing
* Russian National Ski-jumping Centre - Ski jumping and nordic combined
