Death by MRI Machine

A man was killed after being sucked into an MRI machine when he walked into a room where a scan was in progress while wearing a metal chain, authorities say.

According to investigators, officers responding to a 911 call in Westbury, Long Island NY were told that a 61-year-old man had entered an MRI room where a scan was underway.  The man was identified as Keith McAllister, and had accompanied his wife for her knee scan. His wife, Adrienne told officials that she called him in to help her off the table after her scan.  However, he was wearing a 20-pound chain for weight training.  Even though after scans are complete, MRI machines still run power to their large magnets so they are ready for the next scan.  The 20-pound chain was pulled towards the machine, causing him to be drawn into i unexpectedly.

In 2001, a 6-year-old boy was killed during an MRI at a hospital in Valhalla, New York, after a metal oxygen tank flew across the room when the machine’s electromagnet turned on. The magnetized tank struck the child, who died of blunt force trauma injuries.
